Phil from the Anglia Plane Modeller channel built Arma Hobby’s 1/48 Hurricane Mk IIc. It’s his first build in this scale—until now he has worked mostly in 1/72—and he wanted to see how the level of detail and the whole painting and weathering process feel in a larger format.

He used 3D-printed flaps and exhausts, plus Quinta cockpit upgrades. The model was primed with Mr Surfacer 1500 and then painted in RAF Sky, Dark Green and Dark Earth. Metallic areas were finished with AK Xtreme Metal.

He skipped decals entirely—all markings, roundels and stencilling were painted using 1ManArmy masks and MRP paints. After sealing the paintwork, he added light wear with a brown/smoke wash and 502 Oils around the exhausts, fuselage and engine panels. Finally, he added subtle scuffs using metallic wax and finished everything with a matt clear coat.

In the author’s own words:

The Arma Hobby Hurricane Mk.IIc was my first build in 1/48 scale having previously focused on 1/72. I wanted to show more detail in the build and after reading very positive reviews, this kit seemed like a great choice. The fit was excellent, clear instructions and the surface detail was superb.

I added a few extras including 3D printed landing flaps & exhaust stacks. After assembly I primed using Mr Surfacer 1500 & then painted the main colours using Mr Colour Sky, RAF Dark Green & RAF Dark Earth. The metal surfaces such as the interior framework & landing flaps were painted using AK Xtreme Metal.

Decals aren’t my strong point so I wanted to take advantage of the larger scale & paint all of the markings, roundels & stencils on. I used a brilliant mask set from 1manarmy which made precise masking much easier and applied all the markings using MRP paints.

After the main paintwork was completed and sealed in I applied some light weathering with a brown/smoke wash. I used a mix of 502 Oils for some shading around the exhausts, fuselage & engine panels. Finally I added in some scratches and chipping with AK true metal wax before a final matt clear coat.
