After reading a few great reviews of Arma Hobby’s various plane kits, I didn’t need a second invitation to exchange some savings for my set of the P-39Q.

Opening the box, I was greeted by crisp detail on a unique plastic with a matte texture. The size of the sprue gates was a bit concerning at first, but with a bit of care, they cleaned up very well. Construction was extremely enjoyable as the fit was superb, there being only some gaps at the corners of the windshield piece that needed filling.

I chose to model ‘Old Crow’, and used a variety of Mr. Hobby paints airbrushed in several thin layers over a black primer base.

The decals, although quite thick, settled down nicely, using some Tamiya decal solution and a silicone brush to help coax them around detail. Weathering consisted of a simple dark brown enamel wash, a matte coat, some mottling with the same wash mix, and oils applied over random panels to give some interest.

Also, thanks to my friend Bernard, for taking these great photos!
