The new 1/72 model kit of the Japanese army’s legendary Ki-43 Hayabusa fighter in 1/72 is very carefully designed and its detailing is of a very high standard. But even the best plastic injected parts have their limitations and cannot render such fine detail as modern resin 3D printing.
This is especially true for hollow parts with thin walls, such as exhaust tubes, gun barrels and air intakes. This is also the case with the Arma’s Hayabusa. Although a very good model can be assembled from plastic parts, it can still be improved with 3D prints.
Files for 3D self-printing
Everyone who purchases this model kit will find a link and QR code in the kit’s instructions to download a free 3D file that allows them to print a set of extra details for the Ki-43 Hayabusa model themselves. These parts are designed along with the model kit, fit perfectly, ‘plug-and-play’ and require no modifications, directly replacing the plastic parts. You can print them yourself, on a friend’s printer, at a model club, or order a commercial printing service (more and more such services are being advertised online).
Nakajima Ki-43 Hayabusa 1/72 – zapowiedź modelu na targach w Tokio!
If you don’t have access to a 3D printer, during the promotional pre-order you can also optionally order the model kit along with a ready, printed detail set – hurry though, as this offer expires at the end of the promotional pre-order and will not be on permanent offer.
3D-printed detail set includes:
- former with pilot’s seat and seatbelts
- exhaust tubes – two types
- gun barrels
- oil cooler
- fuel cooler
Printed resin parts look like this:
As the resin is semi-transparent and difficult to photograph, I also took photos of the set sprayed with black primer. The quality of the detail is impressive!
