Marcin Wawrzynkowski has built a new 1/48 Airacobra in ‘Old Crow’ marking of the legendary US Ace-of-Aces Clarence ‘Bud’ Anderson.
Let’s look a the photos and read Marcin’s comments. More photos and detailed build log (in Polish) you can find on the Koszaliński Portal Modelarski (Koszalin Modellers’ Portal).
Some extra details
Marcin added some detail on his own – it’s mainly various kinds of cables and wires, made of soft pewter wire of various thicknesses.

Flat and smooth surface
Marcin dealt with the light sink marks visible on the upper surface of the wings with the help of cyanoacrylate glue.

I decided to show step by step how it is done. You will need cyanoacrylate glue, I use for this purpose medium-dense one, and sanding foam of different gradations. The ones shown in the photo are of excellent quality, they are flexible, will conform to any surface and do not get clogged with plastic dust. It is a good idea to have several of them starting with coarser – 240, 400, then medium – 600, 800 and fine 1000, 2000 and even finer for polishing at the very end. Apply the glue with a sharpened match or toothpick. Apply small amounts, being careful not to stain the details of the model surface.
After the glue sets, you can get down to sanding. The hardened excess glue is removed and leveled with coarse-grained foams. On an ongoing basis, we remove the sanded off dust, especially from the panel lines. A medium-sized brush with stiff bristles is good for this. When we are sure that the surface is even and the sink marks have disappeared under the glue layer, we sand the area with foams of increasingly finer grain. In this way we eliminate the scratches, smooth the sanded surface and finally polish it. Sanding itself took me no more than twenty minutes.
Model painting
Painting was the next stage of the work, and it can be said that it followed a long-established pattern, repeated many times. This time I decided to play around with getting the effect of a faded, discolored, generally somewhat worn surface. The effects of these experiments can be seen in the individual photos. To paint the model (interior as well), I used only Bilmodelmakers lacquers.
