The Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat received folding wings, allowing more aircraft to be carried aboard a carrier. The aircraft belonged to VMF-211, which arrived on Wake Island only a few days before the outbreak of hostilities.

The aircraft was flown by Captain Henry T. Elrod. On December 12, 1941, he single-handedly attacked a large formation of Japanese aircraft and shot down two of them. He then carried out daring bombing attacks against invasion ships.

During one of these attacks, using a 100 lb (45 kg) bomb, he sank the Japanese destroyer Kisaragi when the depth charges stored on her stern exploded. This was the first case of a warship being sunk by a Wildcat used as a light bomber.

After all the defenders’ aircraft had been destroyed, Elrod continued fighting on the ground as commander of an improvised infantry unit.
